The integrity of microbiome analysis relies on the immediate preservation of a sample; within minutes of collection, microbial profiles shift and DNA begins to degrade, compromising the accuracy of the biological data. GutLab solves this "data crisis" by moving the laboratory into the home, capturing high-fidelity data at the point of origin.

The design challenge was to create a device that feels discreet and approachable during personal routines while maintaining a strictly clean workflow. To prevent cross-contamination and ensure clinical-grade results, the process is fully automated: the user simply wipes and deposits, and the device handles the rest. The form factor was chosen to balance a soft, inviting exterior with the visual of a high-tech device. Flat exterior surfaces allow for direct wipe-downs for easy cleaning. The result is a dignified experience that integrates a professional microbiology lab into a personal space.
